Who is Chris?

Chris Roberts-Antieau is a self-taught artist, based in New Orleans, who has spent more than five decades following her own path. She explores textile art through thread painting, appliqué, and hand-stitching, using the language of women’s craft to tell bold, witty, and deeply personal stories. Over the years, she has transformed these traditional techniques into richly layered narrative compositions that challenge the old hierarchies of “fine art” versus “women’s domestic work.”

Operating outside the usual institutional structures for most of her career, Roberts-Antieau, now 75 years old, built her own audience, collectors who connect with the sophistication, humor, and emotional intelligence woven into every piece. Her practice honors the creative labor of women and reclaims handwork as a medium of depth, autonomy, and real storytelling. Her work carries the resilience and clarity of someone who has always made art on her own terms, each piece feels like an invitation into a world that is intimate, imaginative, and whimsical.

“Chris Roberts-Antieau’s ‘Fabric Paintings’ Are Brights, Ingenious, And Downright Kalman-esque".”

Huffpost Arts & Culture

“Chris Roberts-Antieau is best known for what she calls ‘fabric paintings’ — cheeky, intricate, appliquéd stories and scenes that she’s been stitching together since the 1980s.”

TIME Magazine

“Her work, which can only be characterized by the euphoria it inspires, comes from a subconscious place, exploring the “dark and light” sides of her personality.”
